The lake is miles away. Why would it still set the humidity?
Champlain is large enough to cool the air over this plain even at a few miles. Cool air over wet clay keeps dew points up, so a brick basement that would dry in the hills stays at the edge of condensation. Distance from the shore is not the same as inland climate.
A crack opened in a dry month and leaked in June. Same crack?
Usually. Champlain clay shrinks when it dries and the wall follows it a little; June swell closes some cracks and uses others as inlets. The movement is seasonal. Sealing the crack without draining the clay just moves the opening to the next weak joint.
