Drained swamp is still swamp hydrology with ditches. The canals lowered the water enough to pour a slab, not enough to put several feet of dry soil under it. In September the ditches run full and the water table under the house is back at the underside of the floor.
A ditch runs behind the house. Is that protecting it or feeding it?
Both, on different days. In fair weather the ditch is the outlet. In a September storm it fills above the lot, and water then moves from the ditch toward the slab. A high ditch is not a moat; it is a reservoir next to the foundation.
The slab cracked years after it was poured. Related to the swamp?
Often. Spoil and peat compress as they dry and as organic matter decays, so a slab poured on that mix can lose support in patches. The crack is settlement more than a storm. Water then uses the crack, which makes the original soil problem look like a plumbing problem.
