Why is a north-flowing river a problem specifically?
Because it thaws in the wrong order. The headwaters release first while the downstream reach is still frozen, so meltwater arrives at an outlet that cannot yet accept it. Water backs up and, on ground this flat, spreads laterally across a very wide area rather than rising in a defined channel.
How flat is flat enough to matter?
Flat enough that surface drainage is essentially a design problem rather than a natural process. On an old lake bed there is no meaningful fall to work with, so water leaves at the rate the constructed system moves it. Grading around a foundation matters more here than in terrain that drains itself.
Does deep frost do damage on its own?
