It changes how concentrated water behaves. St. Peter sandstone is weakly cemented and erodes readily when flow is directed at it, so a downspout or a broken lateral discharging against the bluff face can undercut material rather than simply wetting it. Diffuse moisture is far less consequential than a concentrated stream.
Why do problems appear at snowmelt rather than during summer storms?
