The river stayed down. Why is the bluff house still wet in January?
The wall is holding loess, not the channel. January rain enters the bluff and moves downslope through the cut. A low Mississippi and a wet uphill face is a normal pair. Drainage at the cut is the job; a pump aimed at the river is the wrong one.
Is the historic district a different problem from later frame?
Yes. Pre-war masonry on the terrace fails at the buried face and at plaster that never had a break from the loess. Later frame fails at crawlspaces and poor grade. The 1964 median hides that split. The river-bottom streets are a third problem: backwater.
Vidalia is right across the river. Same loess?
Vidalia sits on the Louisiana side at a different grade. This bluff is the Mississippi loess wall on the Adams County terrace. Shared weather, different cut. Do not treat a Louisiana floodplain house as a Natchez bluff wall.
